I'm not saying a brake flush is guaranteed to end up that way, but if you aren't certain about what you're doing or don't know someone who does then don't be one of those people who thought "3<4<5, so 5 must be best" and then thinks they're saving a couple bucks only to end up having the car towed to the dealer to either replace the entire brake system or watch the insurance company total the car out for less than they owe. Dealers love people who bite off more than they can chew and then have to get their car towed in under a no-crank, no-start situation. Cars today are like space ships on wheels. Gone are the days when uncle Jim Bob could fix any old car under the shade tree through trial and error. Be careful opening bleeder valves if you don't know what kind of pressure your car's system has or how to release it safely. Then you can use a laptop to purge the system properly by yourself without a helper and without breaking anything.įinally, some cars use something called an accumulator that stores extreme pressure for the brake system. If you look on eBay for a USB OBDII controller for your car, you may find one that comes with a download link to a copy of the same software the dealer uses. Some cars have ABS modules that can be ruined if you force fluid through them manually. If you have a newer car and are planning to bleed the system yourself, make sure your car doesn't require you to activate the ABS module with a laptop. Also, water is heavier than brake fluid, and will gradually settle to the lowest points in the system, the calipers, where all the heat is and is most likely to boil. ![]() There's some minor movement of the fluid within the master cylinder as pressure goes up and down, but what's in the lines near the wheels isn't going anywhere. There's no return line from the calipers to the ABS module or master cylinder. There isn't any "circulation" of the brake fluid. ![]()
